On a land far away… Ok just kidding but truly let me tell you about one LONG Friday night we had about a month ago…
We had all gone to bed, just a calm night in the trailer when about twelve something in the morning we heard a crash, saw some lights flash and I woke up thinking, “what the heck just happened”. I made Josh get up to see if he could see or hear anything. I didn’t know if someone was on our property, if there was a car accident, who knows what had happened.
Josh quickly realized we were out of power and walked to the end of our driveway to realize that one section of the oak tree directly across the street from our driveway had fallen down. It brought down power lines with it and that’s the huge crash. Don’t worry stories not over… yet! He came back, got my emergency kit out of my car and was going out to put flares up, while he was out there one car almost didn’t see it (people speed on our road all the time). I’m so glad they didn’t crash right into the big branch in the road!

Josh called the non-emergency line and got sheriff’s on their way out. We waited until they got there to put out actual flares and block the road. What a MESS!! We did notice however that the tree really was rotting in the middle of it and only one section of the half that is leaning over the road and onto our property had fallen. We knew it wouldn’t be too long for that other half to break off.
Oh and don’t let me forget I had to get up the next morning for working at Real Deals (one of my fun side jobs)! PS. still no power… We decide they’ve got it handled and we’ll go back to sleep.
We get back into bed, get back to sleep and then about 3 something the other huge half fell… It was so loud!! This section crushed our mailbox and some of our arborvitae trees… We knew we would be without power for a while. I’m so glad it wasn’t a super cold night yet. The crew was out super early with chainsaws clearing the road (also loud).

So I had to get up extra early, gather all my stuff and head to Mom and Dad’s early the next morning because remember we have NO POWER for me to get ready, take a shower, etc. I’m just glad they let me out of the driveway that morning with a mess everywhere. Needless to say it was a LONG night and a LONG day without much sleep, but it’s the adventure of the farm. We were so glad it wasn’t our beautiful giant oak tree that’s in our front yard crashing on the new house and that nobody got hurt. They got our power back on by mid-day and literally just moved all of the big branches into ditches on both sides of the road.
Josh had quite the mess to clean up on our side and just TODAY, November 13th a crew was out cleaning up some of the tree on our neighbors side across the street.
Here’s what’s left of the beautiful tree at the end of the drive…

We know the other half of the tree will fall at some point but it will fall into the field across the street. Oak trees are just so heavy and you just never know. We know we have some trimming to do on the one in our front yard but it’s just so beautiful! But it’s always better to be safe!
